St Philip was initially a mission of St Mary from 1860. Under St Andrews from 1894 it was then called St Philip and St James Church  It was linked for many years with the  Society of Divine Compassion in Balaam Street, an Anglican order led by Father Andrew which merged with the Society of St Francis in 1951. Severely bombed in the war, services continued in borrowed premises. A new church was opened in 1955.
